Van Isle Wave championing Buddy Check for Jesse cause

This year, all nine Van Isle Wave teams revisited an initiative in support of the mental health of young athletes. Buddy Check for Jesse is a charitable organization founded in Victoria, BC in memory of Jesse Short-Gershman, who died by suicide on October 29, 2014, at the age of 22. Jesse’s Dad, a Sport Medicine Physician, initiated this program in 2018 to promote change and encourage open discussions about mental health among young athletes.

“Being a part of Buddy Check for Jesse was an honour as well as an essential strategy in VI Wave's goals and aspirations for our players” expressed Jodi Grant, Development Program Lead, Pacific FC Youth Development. “We strive to develop players into further pathways and longevity in the game, aiming for peak performance in a safe and supportive culture.  Educating players and families around the strategies and coping mechanisms of their mental health is top priority for our club as we encourage the normalization of communication around mental health and wellness.”

From Nov 16th to Nov 22nd, 2024, Buddy Check for Jesse was introduced to the Van Isle Wave coaching staff who underwent training to champion mental well-being through the power of sports. The objective? Cultivate an environment where mental health is openly discussed, understood, and supported.

As this process began, Van Isle Wave coaches were provided guidelines and scripts on mental health to share with their players. Each team was given Buddy Check swag and educational materials that not only promote team unity but also support coaches in leading effective mental health discussions. Today, Van Isle Wave players can be seen wearing green armbands and wristbands in support of Buddy Check for Jesse and the message it promotes.

“Not only did Buddy Check for Jesse encourage greater awareness and support, but opened communication platforms between players and coaches as well as families involved.  We are so grateful for this partnership with Stu Gershman, and his tireless efforts for this cause, and we hope to be an advocate of this topic and program for years to come,” said Jodi Grant.

By joining the Buddy Check for Jesse community, Van Isle Wave hopes to take a proactive step towards destigmatizing mental health challenges among youth and commit to ensure every young athlete can thrive in a supportive and understanding environment.

Let’s be the change, together!
